DocuType

DocuType is a content management and publishing system based on a combination of RenderX's next generation formatting engine, DiType, and the Wikimedia Foundation's MediaWiki Server. The system is distributed as a ready-to-run VMWare appliance. Users can run RenderX's wikitype technology to create PDF documents of information at wikipedia.org and wikibooks.org.

Description

What Is A Wiki

A wiki is a web site or collection of web pages designed to allow anyone who accesses it to contribute or edit content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to support community websites. Wikis are also used in businesses to provide affordable and effective intranets and for knowledge management. The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is the best-known wiki.

Wiki software is a type of collaborative software that runs a wiki system. Using a common web browser, pages can be created and edited by any number of users. It is usually implemented as a software engine that runs on one or more web servers, with the content stored in a file system and changes to the content stored in a relational database management system.

MediaWiki is a web-based wiki software application used by all projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, all wikis hosted by Wikia, and many other wikis. Although it was originally established to serve the needs of the Wikipedia encyclopedia, it now is being used by companies all over the world for internal knowledge and content management.

What is DiType

RenderX's DiType turns manuscripts into type. Built in and for the digital age, it presents the type in PDF, PostScript and other page description languages, and accepts manuscripts in a number of popular XML markup vocabularies.

DiType is a sophisticated program; it creates better type than a manual typesetter and produces layouts that would otherwise require a lot of tedious trial-and-error work.

The architecture of DiType is based on experience gathered during the lifetime of XEP and widely uses open technologies and protocols.

The heart of DiType is XSL FO rendering engine, accompanied by input format converters and output generators.

What Is WikiType

WikiType is an application that can extract content from a MediaWiki server and convert the content into XSL FO. One example implementation of WikiType is shown at dash-of-pepper.com. This website can be used to extract the content of any Wikipedia article or Wikibook and generate XSL FO from the content. The XSL FO is sent programmatically to RenderX DiType and formatted to PDF on the fly.
